The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey unveiled a 10-year, $45 billion capital plan. Part of the funding will come from customers.
The Port Authority is touting seven-day PATH service on all lines for the first time in 25 years, plus major work on its airports and bridges.
PATH riders will help pay for that improvement. Under the proposed plan, single trip fares would rise 25 cents each of the next four years, capping at $4.00 in 2029.
Last year’s 25-cent increase was the first in 10 years. This plan would guarantee further price hikes through the decade.
The promise of direct weekend service and increased morning rush hour service in Hoboken has excited some commuters who have gotten used to the soft spots in the schedule.
“Overnights and weekends are probably the most difficult,” said Matt, of Hoboken. “There’s been a few times coming from Yankee Stadium where it’s taken a couple more hours than it should have, just waiting that 30 minutes in-between.”
The cost to cross into New York City by Port Authority bridges and tunnels is also rising, due to inflation. Peak E-ZPass crossings would cost $16.84 under the proposed plan. That’s more than $3.00 higher than when the decade started, and more hikes are scheduled for the next two years.
The $2 off-peak discount for E-ZPass users would also be phased out over four years.
The Port Authority says two-thirds of its revenue comes outside the tolls and fares, allowing them to minimize the cost to customers there.
