The drive for commuters between New Jersey and New York is about to become more expensive.

The Port Authority approved a toll hike Friday that will increase the fare on six bridges and tunnels between the two states by 33 percent.

The hike is the first increase from the Port Authority in seven years. Port Authority officials say the increased revenue will go toward maintenance and new construction projects, including the development of a new Hudson River tunnel. Some of the money will also be used to pay for airport security upgrades and the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site.

Passengers using the PATH train line will also start paying a 25 cent increase when they ride.

The fare and toll increases are set to go into effect some time in the spring.
