Recent polls show the gubernatorial race is tightening, with Independent Chris Daggett earning about 17 percent of the vote.
Experts say it's unclear whether Daggett's appeal may draw voters who would otherwise favor Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine or the GOP's Chris Christie. Daggett has been largely ignored in both major party candidates' ad campaigns.
Over the weekend, Daggett was endorsed by The Newark Star-Ledger, the state's largest newspaper. Both Corzine and Christie say endorsements matter little during the campaign.
