Police: Woman begging for money for baby was not in need
Police say that a woman seen panhandling in Union Township asking for money for her baby was not actually in need.
Union Township police say that Dorina Caldaras, of Ridgewood, New York, was seen walking in and out of traffic on Vauxhall Road and asking people for money at the traffic light. She apparently had a box, a photo of a baby and a sign that read, "I have a baby. Please in the name of god help me to buy baby stuff and diapers."
But police say that this was all a scam. They say that Caldaras does not have a baby and did not appear to be in any type of need.
“She had an expensive purse. She had an iPhone and the way she was dressed was not a person who would need help,” says Lt. Victor Correia.
Police say that after some questioning Caldaras admitted that she was part of a larger group of individuals that get dropped off throughout New Jersey to panhandle.
“They have a designated meeting place where later on they get picked up,” Correia says.
Police say that Caldaras was a willing participant in the scam, and did not appear to be coerced or forced into it. They stay that they are looking to find out more about Caldaras’s group.
Police say that panhandling is rare in Union Township.
Caldaras was issued two summonses for panhandling. She has paid for one already and is due in court later this month for the other.
