Authorities are seeking the public’s help in identifying a man accused of sexually assaulting an 83-year-old woman outside a church.
Police said the attack happened around 5:30 a.m. last Friday outside the Korean Community Church of New Jersey, located at 147 Tenafly Rd.
Surveillance cameras captured the attack, which occurred as the woman was walking through a parking lot between the Korean church and St. Cecilia’s Church, located at 55 West Demarest Ave.
Authorities said the video shows a Hispanic man, possibly in his 30s, grab the woman and then tackle her to the ground in a doorway. The man stopped the attack and calmly walked away after the victim was able to wave down a passing vehicle, detectives said. The woman suffered minor injuries.
"This is as bad as it gets. This was an 83-year-old woman going to a church service, an early morning church service. One that she had been to before, and we're aggressively investigating it," Englewood Police Department Detective Timothy Torell said.
Authorities said the man is approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall and was last seen wearing some type of drawstring backpack or shoulder strap backpack, light-colored pants and dark shoes with light-colored soles.
Englewood police said the attack appears to have been random and urge residents in the area to be aware of their surroundings when walking during late night and early morning hours. Officials said both uniformed and plainclothes patrols have been stepped up in the area as well.
