The Vernon Police Department has released officer body camera video of a shooting that left a family dog dead.
Authorities say Patrolman Emmanuel Rivera was responding to reports of an "aggressive" dog Saturday afternoon.
The video begins with Rivera speaking with a concerned neighbor who called police about the dog. The neighbor said that he was scared of the dog. He described the dog as “rabid.”
Rivera asked several neighbors if the dog was prone to biting.

The video then shows the dog running and barking at the officer. Rivera is heard shouting at the dog to “stop” and “back away” before he shoots and kills it.
Owner Jen Hearon says that her 3-year-old Labrador Hiro was a friendly dog. She says that she had no idea the dog got out of the backyard. She says that she found the dog covered in a blanket in the middle of the street after it was shot.
Hearon says that she may file a lawsuit against the Vernon Police Department.
An investigation is underway.
