Hazlet police officers became midwives for a day - helping a woman deliver a baby girl when she and her husband arrived at the station seeking help.
Police say that the soon-to-be parents were on their way to the hospital, but soon realized that they weren’t going to make it. They pulled into the police station and flagged down officers.
Sgt. Kevin Geoghan and Patrolman Pat Kiley came to the aid of the expectant mother and her "frantic" husband. Geoghan, who took charge of the delicate operation, helped deliver the girl at 4:19 p.m. on Wednesday.
“The baby’s head was already out. Dad was supporting the head, so I made sure everybody was all right,” Geoghan says.
Geoghan says that he credits his training at the Monmouth County police academy for knowing what to do during a childbirth situation.
The officers say the mother and the newborn baby girl appeared to be in good health. They were escorted to the hospital by the Hazlet Township First Aid Squad.
