Police say an alleged robbery suspect was shot by an officer near the William Paterson University campus Wednesday evening.
According to authorities, 26-year-old Jack Sayegh, of Franklin Lakes, was caught by campus officer Pablo Vinas as he tried to break into a car in the university?s parking lot. Vinas approached the car with his gun drawn and ended up in a struggle with the suspect. According to police and witnesses, Vinas? gun fired. It remains unclear how many shots were fired and whether the shots were intentional or accidental.
The Passaic County Prosecutor?s Office is investigating the incident. Investigators have reported proof of at least one bullet fired at the scene. They will examine the guns of all police officers on the scene to determine the exact number of shots fired. The prosecutor?s office says it will also examine the 911 taped calls, any video or audio tapes recorded by the police vehicles and witnesses? testimony.
Police say Sayegh was shot in the shoulder and is in stable condition at St. Joseph?s Hospital. According to police, he is a former William Paterson student.
