A Newark police officer is being lauded as a hero for stopping a man threatening to commit suicide from harming himself.
Police body-cam video shows Officer Jason Inacio using his training to convince the man to drop a knife he was holding to his own neck. Inacio promised the man some Chinese food.
"Once we had the food I made a deal with him. I said, ‘If I give you the food I'll let you eat it on the way to the hospital if you just come out of the room,’” Inacio says.
Authorities say that the man, who was not identified, had told police that he had taken drugs before threatening suicide. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available 24 hours a day for anyone who needs to talk to someone. That number is 1-800-273-8255.
