The Newark Police Department is looking for help identifying a man accused of robbing a jewelry store and then carjacking a woman to escape.
Police say a man went into Vinhas Jewelers Inc. on Ferry Street Thursday morning and asked to see some Cuban gold chains. When the clerk took out the chains, police say the suspect took out a gun and demanded that his fanny pack be filled with gold chains.
After the suspect took the fanny pack full of chains, police say he ran from the store and fired a shot at the owner who tried to follow him outside.
Authorities say the suspect then pointed the gun at the driver of a beige 2006 Nissan Altima and ordered her to give up the car. He fled the scene in the stolen car, which was later found in the area of Somme Street and Raymond Boulevard in Newark.
Police say that the suspect is a white or Hispanic male who may have a tattooed "sleeve" on his right arm depicting flames near his wrist. An image of the suspect was captured on the store's surveillance camera.
Anyone who may have any information about the robbery is asked to call Newark police at 1-877-695-8477 or 1-877-695-4867.
