Authorities in Monmouth County are investigating an alleged case of animal hoarding inside a home in Howell Township.

Police were called to the home on East Third Street Tuesday after reports of animals inside a home in deplorable conditions.

Investigators have not released many details about the case, but say that the resident of the home was arrested. Neighbors tell News 12 New Jersey that they believe that there were dozens of cats and kittens living inside the home.

News 12 crews did see many stray cats roaming around the area, and saw that the home did not appear to be well maintained.

It was not immediately known if the animals would be able to be put up for adoption later.

This isn't the first time an animal hoarding case has happened in the township. In June 2016, crews rescued 276 dogs from inhumane conditions in a bi-level home on Bennett Road. The couple who owned the home pleaded guilty five months later and had to pay about $25,000 in fines.

That was the largest animal hoarding case in Monmouth County history.
