A fight between two dogs in Kearny has resulted in police charging both owners.
The charges stem from an incident along Elm Street on March 18. The incident was recorded on a nearby Ring doorbell camera.
Police say that a pit bull running loose through the neighborhood severely bit Joel Perez’s Yorkshire terrier. Police say that Perez is then seen in the video picking up the pit bull by the collar and slamming the dog on the ground. He allegedly attempted to do it multiple times until neighbors started yelling at him to stop.
Perez was charged with one count of animal cruelty.
Police say that Perez’s dog suffered liver damage and lacerations that required surgery.
The owner of the pit bull was identified as Peggy Andrade. She lives two blocks over from Elm Street. She was not present at the time of the incident.
Police have issued two charges to Andrade – one for having a dog unleased in public and for allowing a dog to run at large. She was also arrested for failure to pay child support – related to an outstanding case in Passaic County.
Perez will have to go before a Superior Court judge in April to have his case heard.
Andrade will have her case heard in Municipal Court.
News 12 New Jersey tried to reach both owners for comment, but neither was home.
