Police: Coyote mauls small dog in Piscataway; more coyotes spotted
A coyote mauled a small dog in Piscataway, as police warn the public about other sightings in the area.
Police say that the attack happened near Wynnwood Avenue and Possumtown Road. Police did not say when the attack occurred, but warned the public to avoid approaching wild animals.
The warning comes on the same day that Rutgers University announced that the Rutgers Ecological Preserve, also located in Piscataway, would reopen next week following two coyote attacks on campus.
Two people affiliated with the university were injured after they were bitten by a coyote while walking near the preserve. Officials chose to close the preserve on Nov. 14 as a precaution.
Officials located a coyote den inside the preserve and set up traps to find the coyote responsible for the attack.
Rutgers police officers eventually had to euthanize a coyote after one came at them in an aggressive manner. Officials say that they believe that this animal was responsible for both attacks, and they say that it is likely that the animal was sick due to its aggressive nature.
The coyote tested negative for rabies, according to officials.
The Rutgers Ecological Preserve will reopen Dec. 2 at 7 a.m.
