As a community in Pequannock remains on edge, police are revealing more information about an attempted sexual assault on a child.
Police say on Monday a man broke into a Pompton Plains home and attempted to sexually assault a child. They say the man was chased away before he touched the child. Police are still looking for that individual.
Investigators believe the 5-year-old girl was the target of her would-be attacker. Authorities say the predator entered the home through a bedroom screen that had two small slits on either side. According to police, those slits may have been made prior to the intruder breaking in, which means he planned his attack.
Prosecutors believe the family involved may be safe, but they are warning other families with children to be on the lookout. They are asking neighbors to be more vigilant and to report any suspicious people hanging around children.
