Two Newark men affiliated with the Bloods street gang are facing life in prison for the murder of a rival rapper, according to the United States Attorney's Office for the District of New Jersey.
Officials announced Friday that Tyler Shorter and Amir Canty were convicted of racketeering conspiracy, murder in aid of racketeering, conspiracy to commit the same and firearms offenses.
Prosecutors say the two men were known to use social media and drill rap music to tout the gang’s power and instill fear in victims and competitors.
The victim was a drill rapper and member of a rival neighborhood-based gang. Following a series of “threatening and disrespectful music videos and songs”, Shorter shot the victim on South Orange Avenue in 2022.
Cany acted as the getaway driver, according to court documents. Prosecutors say the murder was “part of a crime spree where Canty and Shorter traveled to and from New York in a stolen car to attempt to steal and carjack additional luxury cars.”
Both men are facing life in prison when they are sentence in March.
