Police in Delaware have charged the man they say fatally struck a New Jersey teen who was starting her freshman year at the University of Delaware.
Brian Briddle, 27, of Newark, Delaware is charged with second degree murder, possession of a deadly weapon, disregarding a police officer’s signal, and several other charges.
The incident happened Tuesday at 11:53 p.m. when University of Delaware police attempted to stop Briddle, who was driving a motorcycle, for a traffic offense.
Briddle fled at a high-rate speed along East Main Street, where he struck a 18-year-old Noelia Gomez, who was walking on the crosswalk. The crash happened just one minute after the attempted traffic stop.
Briddle was thrown of the motorcycle as a result, which struck four other pedestrians and a light pole.
Bystanders attempted lifesaving measures on Gomez, but they were unsuccessful.
Three of the pedestrians only suffered minor injuries.
Briddle is currently in the custody of the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington.
