Police say a 6-month-old baby died Friday night from broken ribs and other injuries caused by his father.

According to Hudson County authorities, 6-month-old Ethan Ruiz sustained old and new injuries, including broken ribs and liver damage when he arrived at Christ Hospital in Jersey City Friday. Police say he died from blunt force trauma to his torso within an hour of arriving at the hospital.

Both parents, who are Peruvian nationals, have been charged in the infant?s death. His father, 30-year-old Miguel Ruiz, is charged with aggravated manslaughter and is being held on $500,000 bail. His mother, 33-year-old Erika Flores, is charged with endangering the welfare of a child and is being held on $100,000 bail.

Police say it appears the infant was frequently abused. Neighbors claim they heard the couple fighting often, saw Flores with bruises on her face, but never heard a baby crying.

According to the prosecutor, immigration officials have been notified to check Ruiz?s and Flores? immigration statuses. Flores? 2-year-old son from an earlier relationship has been taken into custody by the Division of Youth and Family Services. Authorities say he does not appear to be abused.
