Police: 1 woman dead in Lindenhurst crash

Suffolk County police say a woman was killed in a Lindenhurst car crash Monday night, after being struck on the passenger side on Sunrise Highway.
Copiague resident Yaneris Batista-Almonte was driving westbound in a 2009 Toyota sedan on Sunrise Highway, where she was struck on the passenger side by an eastbound 2020 Honda SUV at approximately 11 p.m. Her front passenger, Emely Tejada, 21, of Amityville, was killed in the crash.
Kelvin Batista, 17, of Oakdale was a backseat passenger in the Toyota and was transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries that are not life-threatening. Batista-Almonte, 23, was also taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Honda was 33-year-old Gregory Marchini. He and another front seat passenger in the Honda were not injured. Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks.
Safety has been a major concern at that intersection for a while. Last month, a man on an electric bicycle was killed there when he was hit by a car.
Around three years ago, three boys were injured when they tried to cross the intersection and were hit by a car.
Efforts have been made to discourage reckless driving in the area with the introduction of more red-light cameras.
Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the First Squad at 631-854-8152.
