A person is dead and others were badly hurt Saturday morning following a multivehicle crash in the Village of Chester.
The Orange County medical examiner was called to the scene of the accident involving two SUVs and a pick-up truck at Route 94 and Main Street around 10 a.m. It happened in front of the Chester Firehouse.
The victim has been identified as 40-year-old Alberto Mata.
An exact cause was not immediately clear. Route 94 was closed well into the afternoon but has since reopened.
Neighbors said a loud bang woke them up. One neighbor said she saw first responders pull a young child from one of the vehicles.
Resident Connie Roach said Route 94 needs more traffic lights.
"[Route] 94, people use it as a raceway…This intersection, people will blow through the stop sign,” she said.
An SUV crashed into the Chester Firehouse at the same intersection two years ago.
