Authorities say one person is dead and several others are injured after a fast-moving fire at a home in Newark.
The fire on the 300 block of Summer Avenue broke out shortly before 6 a.m. Wednesday and was fought by numerous firefighters who had the fire under control in about 45 minutes.
Officials did not release the victim’s name, but neighbor Ursula Payano tells News 12 New Jersey that his name was Jorge. She says that he would often bring her family fresh bread “just because.” Payano says that Jorge was trapped in the basement of the home as it burned.
“It was very scary not being able to help them - that really broke our heart,” she says. We heard someone saying ‘Help, help’...and everyone wanted to help them.”
Two pets also died in the fire.
One of the people injured was a man who leaped from a second-floor window to escape. A police spokesman says the man is in critical condition with a head injury. Three other adults had minor injuries.
The American Red Cross says it is helping eight adults who were displaced by the fire.
It wasn't immediately clear what sparked the fire.
