A suspect is being sought in connection with a suspected fatal carjacking attempt in Newark that left a delivery driver dead, authorities said Monday.

Newark police received calls at about 12:45 p.m. Saturday reporting a crash involving two vehicles and a pedestrian on the 800 block of Bergen Street, according to the Essex County prosecutor.

Investigators believe the victim left his vehicle unattended while delivering packages when a suspect jumped inside. The victim then held onto the car in an attempt to stop the suspect from driving away, authorities said.

The vehicle traveled south on Bergen Street before crashing into a parked car, causing it to overturn and crush the victim, officials said. The suspect then got out of the vehicle and ran away.

The victim, Jhon Aponte Alarcon, 46, of Elizabeth, was taken to University Hospital where he later died.
