Plainfield man accused of 2023 fatal stabbing at train station charged with murder

Prosecutors say U.S. Marshals arrested Aswad Spruiel in Pennsylvania where he’s awaiting extradition to New Jersey.

A man in Plainfield accused of fatally stabbing a man at a train station in 2023 was arrested almost a year later and charged with murder.
Aswad Spruiel, 44, allegedly stabbed a man at a train station back in July 2023. According to authorities, Plainfield police and NJ Transit police found Juquin Smith, 45, with stab wounds on July 6, 2023, at Plainfield Train Station on 4th Street. Smith was transported to a local area hospital where he died.
U.S. Marshals arrested Spruiel Friday in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, where he’s awaiting extradition to New Jersey, Union County prosecutors announced on Monday.
Spruiel was charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count of third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.
