Routine call for disabled vehicle leads to police chase in East Brunswick

A Newark man was arrested after allegedly stealing a car that later broke down, leading to a police chase in East Brunswick.
According to police, officers responded to Route 18 southbound and Eggers Street on Sunday at about 2:43 p.m. for reports of a disabled vehicle. When police arrived, they learned that Good Samaritans had already helped the driver move the vehicle to a safe location. When the driver spotted police, he fled on foot, with officers in pursuit.
While officers continued searching for the suspect, later identified as Veelique Farrior-Harris, 23, of Newark, they confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen.
A short time later, police said officers were flagged down on University Road by a resident who said someone matching the suspect’s description had climbed into a car parked in the driveway. When Farrior-Harris saw police, he allegedly grabbed cash from inside the vehicle and fled again.
Police later located him behind the Lake Avenue apartments. He fled once more but was quickly apprehended, police said.
Farrior-Harris was charged with obstruction, burglary, resisting arrest and unlawful taking of a means of conveyance.
“What began as a call for a disabled vehicle quickly developed into an investigation involving a stolen vehicle, an additional crime against one of our residents, and a fleeing suspect,” Police Chief Frank LoSacco said in a statement. “Our officers worked together to quickly locate and apprehend the suspect while protecting the surrounding community.”
