Dog owners in Jersey City say a pit bull is forcing them to use caution when walking their pets.
Residents claim that the owner of the pit bull is irresponsible. They say the owner has allowed her dog to roam freely around Hamilton Park. They claim the pit bull often terrorizes other dogs.
Jersey City Animal Control said it's possible the pit bull is no longer in the town. Officer Joe Frank said he was attempting to tell the owner of possible legal action Wednesday. He said she handed the dog to someone who proceeded to drive off.
One man who claimed the pit bull attacked his dog on Monday told News 12 New Jersey of a similar incident. Paul Brost said he tried to speak with the owner after his dog was attacked. Brost claims she gave the animal to someone that was in a van and that the person drove away.
The owner of the pit bull is due in court next month for keeping an unleashed and unlicensed dog. At that time, Animal Control plans to find out where the dog is. If the dog is still in the city, Animal Control plans to enforce the potentially dangerous dog law, which means the pit bull will be muzzled and tattooed.
