New Jersey?s gay community is outraged after yearbook pictures of two young men kissing were blacked out by Newark educators.
Andre Jackson, a graduating senior from East Side High School in Newark, said he still wonders why pictures of him and his boyfriend were singled out.
He paid $150 for his own yearbook page. Friends and fellow students found out that Superintendent Marion Bolden considered Jackson's picture illicit and ordered it to be colored over.
Gay rights group Garden State Equality said the case is an example of homophobia. The group is demanding a public apology from the school superintendent and wants new yearbooks distributed without any pictures blacked out.
Students said there were no rules prohibiting pictures of people kissing from being published in the yearbook.
News 12 New Jersey reached out to the Newark Board of Education and school superintendent. No one was available for comment.
