More than 100 cats and dogs rescued from poor conditions at a Saddle River mansion will be put up for adoption, the Bergen County SPCA said Monday.
The animals have been under the care of veterinarians for a week and they are doing much better than before, SPCA Chief James Lagrossa said.
Last week, 113 cats and six dogs were carried out of Philip Tamis and Cynthia Stewart's feces-filled home on Burning Hollow Road. Officials said nearly two dozen animal carcasses were found in the house, and a few more with severe health issues needed to be put down.
Tamis and Stewart were charged with 20 counts each of animal cruelty and could face additional charges.
The pair relinquished its ownership claim to the animals, allowing them to be placed in other homes. Lagrossa said dozens of people, from as far away as California, have offered to adopt the pets.
