About 25 dogs and cats rescued from Louisiana made their way to New Jersey Tuesday to find new homes.
Devastating floods in Louisiana forced many families to abandon or surrender their pets as they escaped the floodwaters.
Humane Society of Louisiana volunteers drove 29 straight hours to bring the pets to New Jersey. They say that the shelters in Louisiana are at capacity and many of the animals would have been euthanized.
Pet ResQ Inc. in Tenafly took in the pets and will help find them homes.
"It's in my soul. I have no other explanation. Animals are worth it as far as I'm concerned," says Pet ResQ founder Robyn Urman. "I don't believe a zip code should determine anything...if you're able to help something, I have to do it."
The dogs and cats will stay at foster homes until permanent homes can be found. Some of the animals will be ready for adoption this weekend.
Anyone wishing to meet the pets can do so at Tenafly's Woofstock Festival this Sunday at Municipal Circle Park.
