Undocumented immigrants who live in Perth Amboy will have an ally in Mayor Wilda Diaz, the mayor announced Tuesday.
The announcement comes due to concerns regarding President-elect Donald Trump's proposed immigration policies. Trump has said that he plans to deport 2 to 3 million undocumented immigrants who have criminal records once he takes office. But some are concerned that the administration will go after all undocumented citizens.
Mayor Diaz says that the Perth Amboy Police Department's job is to protect residents, not deport them. She says that the city will resist any possible crackdown on undocumented immigrants in the city.
When pressed on whether the city could sustain a loss in federal aid over immigration policies if it should come to that, Mayor Dias says it's too soon to know the impact.
The mayor estimates that there are at least 7,000 undocumented residents who live in Perth Amboy.
