A seawall construction project that wasn?t set to begin until next year has been placed on the city?s emergency repair list.
The roadway along Pennyfield Avenue skirts along the water before going on to the college campus of SUNY Maritime. For the past few years, water has been chewing away at the earth under the road?s seawall. The damage wasn?t anything to worry about ? until now.
The city reportedly planned to rebuild the whole seawall in 2009, but waves eroded the barrier so quickly that the seawall had to be placed on the city?s emergency repair list. In the meantime, crews have been working to stabilize the wall until long-term construction can begin.
People who frequent the area say the work is needed, and they?re glad it?s getting done.
