Penn State University has suspended a fraternity following the off-campus death of a 17-year-old boy.

The school announced the interim suspension on Tuesday.

The teenager, identified in published reports as John “Jack” Schoenig, died at an off-campus house Saturday occupied by members of the Chi Phi fraternity. Penn State says the house is not the fraternity's official residence.

Police found Schoenig unconscious with shallow breathing. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say the teenager had no signs of trauma.

Schoenig was not a Penn State student but was visiting the school, according to the university.

Penn State says the fraternity may not participate, attend or organize any functions, activities or events pending the outcome of the investigation.

This is not the first time that a Penn State fraternity has been suspended after someone died. The Beta Theta Pi fraternity was banned from Penn State following the death of student Timothy Piazza, of Lebanon, two and a half years ago.

Piazza died after a night of heavy drinking and hazing.

His death led to anti-hazing laws in Pennsylvania.
