It appears the Saint Peter’s men’s basketball team will be honored
with a parade at the end of the work week, although details continue to be
worked out.
Mayor Steven Fulop tells News 12 all indications
are a parade for the team will happen Friday afternoon.
Players and coaches returned to campus early this morning after
their heartbreaking loss to the Tar Heels of North Carolina Sunday in Philadelphia.
Fulop says this team deserves to be
honored for reaching the Elite Eight, something a No. 15
seed had never been done before.
“Everybody sees a little bit of themselves in this team,” says
Fulop. “These are kids that maybe weren’t recruited that heavily have a little
chip on their shoulder. Their neighborhood people and for them to run up
against some of the best college players in the world is really significant.
So, from our standpoint, we’re proud and we’re thankful and we’re going
recognize them because their champions to us.”
Saint Peter’s is also the first Metro Atlantic Athletic
Conference champion to reach the Elite Eight.
Fulup was not specific on a parade time or the exact parade route,
at this point only saying he expects it will pass by the university on Kennedy
Boulevard.
