Some Newark teens say they just wanted to make a little extra money this summer, but they?ve yet to see a paycheck.
Two-thousand young people in Newark are working summer jobs at local recreation centers and other facilities as part of the youth jobs program. The city pays for their $7.15 an hour wage. However, some teens claim when payday came last Friday, the checks didn?t.
?I think that?s sad, that?s pitiful,? teen Taneequah Hester said. ?Because if we worked for three weeks, now four weeks, we should have had one paycheck at least.?
Newark Mayor Cory Booker, who expanded the jobs program, said the city wasn?t prepared to handle the extra paperwork. He adds some teens made errors in their paperwork that also caused delays.
Booker said the program is fully funded and every teen will be paid.
