The Paterson Police Department is looking for a fresh start and a better relationship with the public after a corruption probe resulted in seven police officers getting indicted for crimes.
City officials say that they are hoping to bring a new era to the department – and they are asking the city’s residents to help them do that by joining the police force.
“We do believe that Patersonians should be part of the solution, creating those tools of trust,” says Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh.
Several of the indicted police officers have pleaded guilty to their crimes. Others are still going through the court process.
Paterson Police Chief Troy Oswald says that the public is the key to rebuilding the department.
"My call is out to all of them who are looking for a calling in life - to be bigger, to be part of something big and help people. To be there, a good communicator, to show that empathy and to be able to help,” he says.
There are 40 positions available. Officials say that they are hoping to get a variety of candidates that will help grow the force.
"We are a city and a department that celebrates our diversity and our commitment to being inclusive by welcoming and encouraging the residents of all backgrounds and walks of life to join us and help to be a part of the solution,” says Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale. “And to be our partners in building a better, safer stronger and more prosperous Paterson."
The deadline to apply to take the civil service test is Aug. 31. More information can be found on the police department’s website.
