Students in Patchogue celebrated their prom on Main Street Monday.
The Patchogue-Medford Union Free School District held the 2021 prom outside because of the pandemic. The event was so successful, they did it again this year.
Part of Main Street was shut down for the outdoor prom, which was hosted by local restaurants, business owners and the school district.
"These kids really kind of lost out on some years in high school so we just wanted to make the last time in high school memorable for them," says Kristen McMahon, co-class advisor.
Students began the prom night by walking the red carpet and having their names announced by a local radio station.
There was a DJ, a dance floor, games and bicycle bars with mocktails.
The students say it's great to be in the center of a positive experience in the midst of a pandemic that disrupted a large part of their high school experience.
"COVID has been like a huge impact to all of our lives as you know and I'm just happy that everything is getting better and I wish the best for everyone," says senior Jacqueline Ryan.
Organizers of the prom say when business owners heard the school wanted to do an outdoor prom again, no one asked for money or hesitated to take part in the event.
