Parts of Ocean County experienced severe flooding, especially in communities along Barnegat Bay, during the recent nor’easter.
In the Tuckerton Beach neighborhood, every street was covered by flooding. Tuckerton’s OEM Coordinator Mike Dupree says it's the highest flooding they have seen since Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
The Ocean County Sheriff's Department sent out the high-water SHERP vehicle to help rescue people stranded in their homes or vehicles. A car was seen half-submerged and likely destroyed. Water poured into unraised homes and garages, causing property damage.
“What we're seeing is a lot of cars that are stuck in the middle of the roadways, and they are calling 911 for some help to get out of out of the middle of the road. Their cars are just completely filled with water. Came into the doors. It's pretty high,” said Lt. Jaime Phillips, of the Ocean County Sheriff's Department.
“Is it worth living back here in the summertime when it's nice? Yeah, people ask us that all the time, but it's the price to pay living on the water. But in the summertime, there's nothing else like it,” said Kim Silver, while carrying the family dog to higher ground.
The afternoon high tide was expected to be the worst as conditions were expected to slowly improve into Tuesday morning.
