With class sizes in the city 10 to 60 percent larger than the statewide average, they're asking the city to spend a quarter of the education settlement with the state on reducing class sizes. The estimated $11 billion settlement was the result of a lawsuit filed by the Campaign for Fiscal Equity. The suit claimed that the state was shortchanging Bronx and city public school students.
To generate more support for the idea, New Yorkers for Smaller Schools published a leaflet that's being handed out at some public schools around the borough. They're asking Bronx parents to urge the city to let the voters decide how to spend the city's settlement money.
