The owner of a City Island cafe that was destroyed in a fire over the Thanksgiving holiday says he plans to rebuild it better than before.
Alex Pertsovsky says that when he arrived at his cafe Sugar and Spice the Saturday morning after Thanksgiving, the fire had already destroyed almost everything inside.
Pertsovsky says the flames started on the second floor, and while he's not sure what sparked them, he says it may have been caused by a gas leak.
He says he was looking forward to providing customers with pastries and treats for the Christmas and Hanukkah holidays.
Pertsovsky says he's still waiting for the insurance company to assess the damage and for the Department of Buildings to approve his plans to rebuild the cafe.
He says he has big plans to improve the cafe, which include serving alcohol and a new dinner menu.
Pertsovsky is optimistic that Sugar and Spice will be reopened within a couple of months.
