A project being carried out by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to replenish beaches on the Jersey shore is drawing complaints in Ortley Beach.
The work was supposed to not take up more than two blocks at a time, but has taken up six blocks in Ortley Beach.
Ortley Beach summer resident Chrissy D’angelo says that the replenishment has been a financial nightmare for renters trying to make up for lost Sandy income.
She says renters that are still coming down are very disappointed because they can't access the beach for sometimes as many as seven blocks.
She claims at one point residents could not access the beach from Harding Avenue all the way to 8th Avenue.
D’angelo says, “There have been so many people talking about not returning to Ortley Beach and that’s bad for us too.”
Toms River Mayor Thomas F. Kelaher said that while he understands some renters are concerned tenants might not come back, if the beach isn’t replenished there might be nothing to come back to, and that the timing of the replenishment is solely in the hands of the federal government.
