An oily substance polluted the Barnegat Bay Tuesday in Ocean County.

According to New Jersey's Department of Environmental Protection, food grease and cooking oil had been leaking from a dumpster into a storm drain near an ACME Supermarket. They say the issue has since been fixed. 

Now, silt containing iron from a storm drain on Eisenhower Avenue is leaking into the bay. However, the DEP says none of it is hazardous. 

Residents say they're stopping water sports and swimming in the bay until the substance is gone. They say they want the DEP to put a barrier in the bay to trap the oil.

The DEP says a barrier in the bay is not necessary and that any residual oil left will break down on its own. They say the silt will eventually dissipate, but a small algae bloom in the area may also be contributing to the pollution.
