Law enforcement officials rescued more than 100 dogs and arrested eight people during a dogfighting ring investigation.
Officials executed search warrants at a compound in Cumberland County and two other locations related to the fighting network.
Officials say that the dogs were bred and trained to fight. Veterinarians from the Humane Society were there to perform medical evaluations and provide care for the dogs. Attorney General Matt Platkin says the dogs are being housed in an undisclosed location to receive medical care.
Eight people are facing charges, including the alleged ringleader 44-year-old Bruce “Hollywood” Low, Jr., as well as Low’s mother and son.
“Dismantling a dog fighting ring is not just about rescuing animals; it's about dismantling a culture of cruelty and restoring compassion to our communities,” New Jersey State Police Superintendent Col. Patrick Callahan wrote in a statement.
“The alleged illegal activities that were uncovered by this investigation will not go unpunished,” Platkin added.
Those arrested face numerous charges, including racketeering, money laundering and dogfighting charges.
