Officials have identified the Perth Amboy police officer who died Wednesday evening.

Officer Arcadio Rivera Jr. was a 26-year veteran of the police force serving in the patrol division.

Authorities say that the crash happened around 7:30 p.m. on the 300 block of Harbortown Boulevard. Rivera was off duty at the time and was driving his personal vehicle. He appeared to experience a medical emergency that caused him to lose control of his vehicle and collide with parked vehicles.

The medical emergency has yet to be confirmed by authorities.

Officials responded to the crash scene to perform lifesaving measures on Rivera, who was found to be breathless and subsequently suffering from cardiac arrest once removed from the vehicle.

Rivera was also a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He was 54 years old.
