Officials have announced a body has been located in the rubble
following a
trash facility fire Tuesday in Elizabeth.
According to city officials, the fire may have been sparked by machinery
at the site, leading to the collapse of the building itself.
Officials say the fire began at Waste Management's Julia Street
transfer station around 2 p.m. Large plumes of black smoke could be seen for miles.
Since it’s a transfer station, garbage trucks
bring the garbage there and then it is taken to a landfill.
A couple of dozen workers were inside when the fire started. They
say they heard a pop and then a warning of fire over the radio.
Surrounding homes were evacuated. News
12 is told the building is a complete loss.
