The governors of New Jersey and New York are joining forces to ensure each state has enough federal funding for Homeland Security.
Governor Jon Corzine (D-NJ) and Governor Eliot Spitzer (D-NY) unveiled their plan at the Hoboken Terminal on Hudson Street Friday. The governors say they are concerned the states will receive less funding after both were grouped into one security region by the federal government. Last year, New York City?s funding was cut nearly in half. This year, the government grouped the two states together into one Urban Area Security Initiative.
The governors wrote a letter to Homeland Security Chief Michael Chertoff about their concerns. Spitzer says the case made to leaders in Washington will be a strong one. Corzine says he hopes New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R) will also join in the efforts to make sure the states get enough funding.
