A Nutley family spent Father?s Day honoring the family patriarch who died from skin cancer and warning others about the sun's danger.
Mike Geltrude spent his life outdoors playing sports and coaching at Nutley High School. Relatives say Geltrude was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in December 2004 and died in February 2006. Doctors say 80 percent of skin damage happens before age 18 and pediatric skin cancer cases have increased 100 percent over the past 20 years. Doctors blame tanning beds. The Geltrudes have teamed up with lawmakers to introduce a bill that would ban children under 14 from tanning beds and require parental consent for children ages 14 to 18. The New Jersey Legislature will take up the issue in the week ahead.
