Police have released more details about a beating inside a University Heights nursing home last week that resulted in a man's death.
Police say Frank Mercado, 77, suffered internal bleeding after a Dec. 8 altercation with an employee of University Nursing Home on Grand Avenue. According to a criminal complaint, 41-year-old CherryLee Young was seen punching Mercado repeatedly before he fell backward. Mercado was then impaled by a piece of metal sticking out from a broken table.
Mercado was taken to Montefiore Hospital, where he died. The medical examiner says his death was a homicide.
Young has been charged with criminally negligent homicide, felony assault and endangering the welfare of an elderly person.
University Nursing Home had no comment for News 12 about the case. Reports say Young has been suspended from work.
Young is out on bail and will be back in criminal court on Jan. 13.
