The first full day of deliberations in the corruption trial of former Newark Mayor Sharpe James and his one-time mistress Tamika Riley ended without a verdict Thursday.

Jurors are working through 13 counts filed against James and Riley, including four federal counts of fraud. Though the majority of their day was spent behind closed doors, the jurors emerged at one point to have the wording of a charge explained to them.

James has been accused of using his power to help Riley purchase city-owned properties and then sell those properties without making contract-required renovations. Riley allegedly netted more than $650,000 in profit from flipping the properties. She is facing eight charges involving tax evasion and fraud.

Deliberations continue Friday.
