The driver of the van that spilled mattresses and boxsprings all over the New Jersey Turnpike Wednesday in Kearny will not be charged at this point, according to New Jersey State Police.
State police say that the debris in the roadway is what caused a tanker-truck to overturn and burst into flames. The driver of that truck was killed.
Police say the driver of the van is Adam Abuhamoud, of Linden. Police say he stayed on the scene after the accident. No charges will be filed against him at this time, but the accident is still being investigated.
State police also say that an autopsy has been performed on the driver of the truck. They believe he is a Newark resident, but say that the medical examiner is still working on the details.
The driver was working for JSK Transport based out of Warren. A spokesperson for JSK Transport identified the driver as 40-year-old Dalip Kumar.
The company says in a statement, "All of us are deeply saddened by the loss of our employee Dalip Kumar. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this most difficult time."
Kumar was hauling 8,500 gallons of gasoline from a refinery in Linden. Police say the tanker overturned when the driver tried to slow down to avoid the traffic that developed as motorists tried to avoid the mattresses on the road.
Firefighters from several towns were called in to fight the fire that started once the tanker overturned. The fire was brought under control about an hour later with the help of foam trucks from Newark Liberty International Airport.
Large plumes of black smoke could be seen for miles immediately following the crash.
The northbound lanes on the western spur reopened early Thursday morning after a 13-hour closure.
