Two of New Jersey’s representatives in Congress have introduced legislation calling for the end of online ammunition sales.
Rep. Frank Pallone and Rep. Bonnie Watson-Coleman were joined by local leaders and advocates in New Brunswick Friday to announce the Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act.
The bill would require licensed ammunition dealers to confirm the identity of individuals who arrange to purchase ammunition over the internet.
“We have to stand up to the gun lobby and say ‘Look, maybe one measure doesn’t solve all of the problems, but collectively,” they can reduce the violence, Pallone told News 12 New Jersey.
Pallone also called on Congressional Republicans to support common sense measures.
Pallone and Watson-Coleman’s bill comes as New Jersey’s state lawmakers also introduced new gun control legislation. State Sens. Nia Gill and Dick Codey introduced a bill that would ban .50-caliber weapons. And state Assemblywoman Holly Schepisi introduced a bill to ban bump stocks for rifles.
The call for more gun control comes in the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history in Las Vegas on Sunday. Nearly 60 people were killed and hundreds injured.
