Hundreds of children and families in Paterson came together on Christmas Eve for the New Jersey Community Development Corporation’s annual toy giveaway and holiday celebration. The tradition is now in its 32nd year.
NJCDC, along with city officials, hosted the event to provide families in need with toys, food and holiday activities. Children enjoyed games, face painting, crafts, dancing and photos with Santa Claus.
Organizers said more than 1,700 children were expected to receive toy boxes this year, with additional gifts available for families who registered at the event.
For many families, the celebration offers more than holiday fun. Organizers noted that some attendees relied on rideshares or taxis to get there, highlighting the financial challenges many families continue to face.
Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh also participated by playing Santa for hundreds of children. He said the goal was to make the holiday season a little easier for families who may not be able to afford traditional holiday experiences.
The event is funded entirely through community donations and volunteers.
Organizers say support from residents and local partners helps keep the tradition alive each year.
