The attorney general is calling for an extension following news the state will miss a January 1 deadline to outfit all electronic voting machines with a paper backup system.
The paper backup system will allow voters to see that their vote was counted. There is currently a lawsuit in the state that calls for New Jersey to have almost 11,000 machines thrown out because of reliability concerns.
A judge has ordered the state to come up with a plan B in case it misses the deadline. Attorney General Anne Milgram says that plan is to extend the January 1 deadline to June.
Some residents and organizations argue the machines should be ready by the deadline because of the presidential primary in February. Many worry using the machines in their current condition creates a big risk for an unfair election.
Milgram says she has enough support from lawmakers to get the extension passed before the end of the year. However, Milgram and lawmakers must present their plan to a judge on Monday.
